That is me freaking out over how today went. It had its ups…it had its downs, but most of all it made me feel nothing but love for Jamaica Plain. While on one hand that is awesome, but the other I’m kind of afraid that the other more stinky and discolored shoe will drop. You know how when you hype something up, like a party or a conversation with someone you kind of like…and then the reality turns out to be sooo not like what you had envisioned it to be. That’s what I’m afraid today was – the nice dream. Except it wasn’t hyped…it really happened! Ok enough with the babbling and on with the day!
I decided to dive head first into the job search. I got up early wore a cute outfit, complete with cute, although not very comfortable, shoes. I decided to head out to the Children’s Book Shop first which involved three train changes. The train is no problem, in fact I really like taking the train. Still, even if I do get an offer I’m not sure how much I will enjoy making that commute twice a day.
Anyways, I made it safely to the first bookstore. The lady was very nice, although she didn’t think they were hiring. Turns out she’s a Simmons library science alum as well so we had a really nice talk about the school. She asked me to come back with a resume.
One the way back I stopped downtown and walked around the huge park that sits in the middle of all the high rises. I had forgotten how used to going places with people I had gotten. I started feeling kinda lonely for the first time since I had gotten to Boston. Luckily, I was busy enough in the afternoon that the loneliness started to subside.
I got back on the T and headed home, getting off three stops to early in order to walk the main Jamaica Plain street back so I could scout potential places for employment. On the way back I found a book/CD shop called Rhythm and Muse. Once again, the lady thought that they weren’t hiring but asked me to drop by with a resume. Finally, I hit a bookstore called Jamiacaway Books & Gifts. The guy was incredibly nice and said that he was thinking about leaving and they already were hiring anyways and to please please stop by with a resume.
SOOOOOO….I went back home and got cover letters and resumes ready, headed to the Copy place down the street, paid an arm and a leg for copies then proceeded to make the loop around once again, this time with my brother Joe. When we hit Rhythm and Muse we had started to notice some live musicians out and about. At Rhythm and Muse the owner was popping open a bottle of wine and there were several tipsy older women around the shop. Turns out, the first Thursday of every month is some art thing. All the galleries open their doors, there are live musicians everywhere up and down the main street. Joe and I stopped in and saw some amazing art and heard some beautiful music. Everything from jazz, to classical was being played. There were local artists selling jewelry, photography, painting and carvings.
Seriously, living in a community that promotes art like that? AHHHH MAZING! And the preconceived notion that Bostonians are abrupt and rude? I have yet to see that either.
I dunno, maybe I am in some bubble and it will be popped soonly, but for right now – I am loving Boston. Cross your fingers for me that the job pulls through!
Random side note:
It’s really strange being around Mexicans that aren’t related to me. Like walking down the main street of Jamaica Plain and hearing salsa, reggeaton and seeing people who look like me completely blows my mind. Random, but true.
I miss you all so very much, and hope your summers are going well! Love love love love to you all!
