June 15th - Elena

Dangit

There are a few things that get to me when I’m out of my comfort zone. These are my two biggest.

1. Wizard of Oz joke

Hehe you aren’t in Kansas any more are you?
You know, there’s no place like home right?
Bahahaha people. Trust me, you aren’t the first ones to come up with those witty remarks upon finding out that I’m from Kansas.

2. “blahblahblahblahblahblahblah” *inquiring look*

That being of course, some crazy Spanish speaking person trying to communicate with me in my “native” tounge. Being that there are so many Hispanics here in my neighborhood, I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened yet. But eventually, luck fades. The jig is up. Whatever you want to call it, invariably it happens. Today it happened as I was trying to lean on a post to let two older Mexican gentlemen by. The post shifted making me lose my balance. We all had a good laugh and they continued on…or so I though. Hispanic Old Guy #1 turns around quickly extends a hand and starts “blahblahblah-ing”. I tell him that I’m sorry, but I don’t speak Spanish (I’m not really sure why I always apologize, but I do). I barely got out the last word and he had whirled around and continued walking away. Hispanic Old Guy #2 then turns around, walks backward and says “Well, you look Hispanic”. Me – “Uh, probably cuz I am, but I still don’t speak Spanish”. Hispanic Old Guy #2 shurgs, turns, keeps walking.

ARGH YOU MEXICANS WHO DEEM ME LOWER THAN THOU SIMPLY CUZ I DON’T SPEAK A LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT SPOKEN MAINLY IN SCHOOL, WORK OR GOVERNMENT.

End rant.

Edit:

Okay, I love different cultures, I love living in such a diverse neighborhood – I just wish people wouldn’t make me feel crappy for not speaking a language that I “should” know simply cuz my skin is brown and my Great grandparents lived in Mexico for part of their lives.
